Car problems - headlights make battery die?
i have a 2001 tiburon. it has about 100,000 miles now.
one day after work (at night) i drove it home and stopped at a gas station. it was dark so i had the headlights on. when i went to start it up i could hear the engine try to turn but then just clicking noises. i got a jump but when i turned my lights on the car sputtered and died. i followed my dad home in the alley without the lights on and we parked it...
the next day we cleaned the battery connectors and took the battery to advance to get it charged. the car worked fine the next day, drove it all day with no problems... as soon as it got dark and i used the lights then parked it, it did the same thing - engine tried to turn then just clicked.
other than advance telling me the battery was ok.. my dad and i jumped the car and unhooked the negative battery cable, the car kept running... ive heard if this is so then the alternator is not the problem.
I would say that your alternator is not keeping up with recharging the battery.
Cars run off the battery mainly, and the alternators job is to keep the battery charged up, their job is not to run the car.
Secondly, a battery that is lower then 11.5 volts, will kill the engine on a computerized car, which is what most people drive today. The computer needs at least 12 volts. So when the lights are on, they take a lot of current, more then the battery can put out for any lengh of time, and with the alternator not keeping up the charge, the battery drains very fast, and of course, the car dies.
Headlights are the biggest users of power, they take up a lot of it. If you park your car and leave it running, put your lights to park or shut them off. At idle speeds, the alternator cannot put out enough juice to keep the lights on. Most times, batteries are big enough so that it can be done, for a while at least, but constant leaving the lights on while parked, will drain the battery.
And as mentioned before, never take the negative cable off, to check the alternator. This was for older cars, that weren't computerized. Circuits can become damaged, and also, memory stored in the computer on how your car runs, which takes days or more to get, will be erased and then the computer has to re learn all of it again. Computers learn your driving habits, and how the car responds to hills and flat land driving and so use that information to make your car run more efficiently.
Old tricks from yesterday do not always work, today. The car kept running since it is running on battery power.
Have your alternator checked, and try not to park with the lights on.
