So, the starter on my mini van is going out. It keeps trying to start the car even after the key is removed. It stops if the Negative battery cable is disconnected. The car continues to run. Will driving the car to the parts store with the Negative battery cable disconnected cause any harm?
What your problem is can be answered by two things. First, if the car is running on battery alone your car will not charge, and you won't be able to start it at the parts store. Second, if the starter solenoid is NOT bad, you may have another problem, which is probably the position of the actuator rod that is attatched to your ignition lock. If the latter is true, then you need to turn your ignition key back just a bit until you just feel resistance on it, and just before you turn the key to the off position. If that cures the problem, then you know that you don't have a major repair, just the ignition lock mechanism where it links to the starter mechanism. Try that first before unhooking the negative cable. Then see if you can get a friend to take you to the parts house. If you don't run your alternator circuit you will burn out your voltage regulator, as well as taking a small toll on the battery's recharging and storage abilities.
