I replaced my car battery (2002 Altima) and the thing starts up fine and dandy now, but I'm scared to drive it around because the hold down clamp doesnt fit over this new battery. (same hold down clamp as before, but different brand of battery)
The new battery is a little bigger than than the old one, but nothing absurd. The clamp is the type that is a black bar with 2 long silver bars that screw into the black one. the silver bars have hooks that attach to the bottom of the battery tray. The silver bars seem a little too short to reach the bottom of the tray.
Is it common to have to buy a new hold down clamp with a new battery, or am i just doing something wrong?
No, all batteries are not the same. It appears your new battery is taller than your old one. This happens more than one would think. Lead/acid batteries are held down because
vibrations would crack or break the the lead plates. AGM(absorbed glass mat) batteries do not suffer from this problem. If your new battery is tucked in and not will move or contact metal, take your car and hold down assy. to a auto parts store such as NAPA, Pep Boys, Advance Auto,
Auto Zone etc. You can buy longer "J" bolts or purchase a
universal hold down kit. One stop shop and you will be good to go.
