Why does my Chevy big block engine tick when it is cold?
It only does it when the engine itself is cold not the actual temp outside. This may or may not be related but...oil just disappears..no leak and no smoking to indicate where it is going.
The noise is caused by piston slap! The pistons expand in the cylinder by 3 or 4 thousanths of an inch as they heat up and the noise goes away. The oil burning MAY be damaged piston rings but if you have ever looked down and seen your temperature guage read full broil that would explain the piston noise and the damaged rings, that kind of damage is what happens to 454 chevys when they have been overheated!!!
