Convertible Battery Cable

I accidently switched the red and black cables when jumping a dead battery...?
The ignition key was accidentally left on overnight and caused the battery to die completely. I ACCIDENTALLY put the black on the red and the red on the black. ( I am embarassed that I did that) and when I got the other end connected, the source battery sparked big time and then the Chrysler's red post glowed very bright very quickly. I smelled a little bit of a plastic burning odor. I acted fast and got it all unhooked and then connected it properly. The Chrysler started up fine...I drove it a few minutes and then turned it off. It won't start a day later. Did I do extreme harm or could it just be a dead battery? Everything seemed fine on the dash with the lights, etc....Oh, the car is a 2001, I think, Chrysler Sebring Convertible and the battery is hidden somewhere.
Well when you reversed the polarity you shorted the battery directly to the chasis.. that caused the battery to heat up and possibly melt some internal parts. If you tried to start the car in that condition you might also have fried your alternator which does not handle reversed leads very well. Beyond that your car should be ok. If your radio, dashlights etc. come on then you have not shorted out your fuseable link.
try this..
Pull on the headlight switch. Do the lights come on..?
Yes.. try charging the battery you may get lucky. If charging does no good consider that a NO and go to the next step.
No.... not good.. take the batter off and down to the local auto shop like Pet Boys or Kragen .. they will test it for free.
Battery is good? Will it start with a charged battery?
DRIVE the car down to the same auto shop and have them test the alternator (it can be done in the car if they have the right tools there - if not, then you may have to pull the alternator and take it in)
Like I said.. the odds are its one of those...
