I purchased my xterra in 2004. I take it for most if its maintenance appointments at the dealership, and I have never had a problem with it until today. I went to the grocery store and as I got there I realized I had forgotten my wallet. I drove home to get it and as soon as I hopped in the car, my car refused to start! I have had my share of dead batteries in which I would hear clicking while trying to start the car. In this particular case there is "NO" clicking but more of a "HISSING" sound that comes from the car. All the lights come on when I turn the ignition and my neighbor used a voltage meter to test the battery. Is this an issue that can be possibly fixed with a new fuse, or do I need a new starter. "Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated"!!!!!
The hissing sound you hear could be coming from several different sources. It could be the sound of the fuel pump in the tank, a blower motor, a loose battery connection or a loose connection on the starter solenoid. Don't just start throwing parts at the problem. That can get very costly in a hurry. Have a reputable mechanic inspect your vehicle in order to determine exactly what is not working properly. Also, as odd as it may seem, don't forget the theft deterrent interlock integrated into you ignition system. It is entirely possible for you system to loose its connection with the ignition key. Check your owners' manual to learn more about this feature and how to check if this is the problem.
