i have a 85 mercury cougar, 5.0l with a c4 trans. about every other day when i slow down from a freeway my tranny wont shift out of gear and my car stalls out when i come to a stop. the motor stays engaged with the trans with the shifter in park. if i mess with the starter and let it lunge around a little till it breaks free from the motor it will start.... but i dont know exactly how to go about fixing it... plz help me
THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IS TAN AND PINK AND SMELLS BURNT.
One, I doubt it is a C-4 trans in that vehicle unless someone swapped it out. Two, a C-4 would not exhibit those symptoms. It is more likely the car has either a C-5 or a AOD trans. The C-5 looks very similar to a C-4. The C-5 has a centrifugal lockup converter that could cause the concern. The AOD converter is locked anytime the trans is in third or O/D because the direct clutch shaft is splined to the converter face. If the trans does not dounshift when coming to a stop, it would shudder and stall. Check the fluid condition. If it smells burnt or is brown or black, time for an overhaul or reman. Changing the fluid at this point will not help as the damage is already done. Valve body and governor are contaminated and sticking.
Tan sounds like the fluid is contaminated with water or coolant. Trans overhaul time and have the trans cooler pressure tested.
